Place logs or branches in streams to reduce water flow

Details

Large woody debris (fallen trees, logs, and branches) can be placed in streams to reduce the flow of water and help connect the stream channel to its floodplain, reducing flooding. Work with relevant agencies and landowners to determine feasibility to implement measure.

Capital Cost

Low/Moderate – dependent on equipment costs and expertise required

Operations & Maintenance

Moderate – will require monitoring/maintenance to ensure woody debris is correctly placed

Effectiveness

Moderate/High – can significantly reduce flooding by connecting the stream to the floodplain

Flexibility

High – debris can be moved as needed

Barriers to Implementation

Permitting; design/construction knowledge; maintenance approaches/expertise

Equity

Ensure that techniques do not exacerbate flood risk to equity areas/downstream communities, and/or mitigate associated downstream impacts.
