Use natural materials to restore stream banks

Details

Natural materials are used to restore eroding areas along rivers or streams. For example, vegetation can be planted along banks with rock or log revetments. Work with relevant agencies and landowners to determine feasibility.

Capital Cost

Low/Moderate (implementation) – low material costs, high technical expertise

Operations & Maintenance

Low/Moderate – may require adjustment of rock configurations

Effectiveness

Moderate/High – can limit the flow of water and reduce flooding

Flexibility

High – rock configurations can be adjusted as needed

Barriers to Implementation

DEC permitting; design knowledge

Equity

Ensure that techniques do not exacerbate flood risk to adjacent/downstream communities, and /or mitigate associated downstream impacts.
